UTC Derby Educates Future Rail Industry Recruits with Support from Rail Forum Midlands

At UTC Derby Pride Park, we are proud to be members of the Rail Forum Midlands and to be training the next generation of engineering talent for the rail industry. There are lots of different careers available within the rail industry, from design and manufacturing to maintenance technicians and data analysts all working together to make sure the railway runs smoothly. You can also be employed to help the rail industry become more sustainable and advise on reducing the environmental impact the industry has.

Here Elaine Clark, Chair of the Rail Forum Midlands, explains why the Forum is supporting the UTC.

The rail industry relies on a range of highly skilled jobs to provide a safe railway for passengers and freight. With an ageing workforce we need to attract and recruit large numbers of young people over the next several years to replace those retiring and to cope with planned growth. A wide variety of careers are available from engineering and construction to digital and hospitality!

Rail Forum Midlands (RFM) is a trade association representing some 220 rail companies across the UK. Based in Derby we have a significant number of members in and around the city and across the wider East Midlands region. RFM provides a range of services to members from representation to government to a programme of annual events. We have a strategic workstream focussed on people and skills to support the rail industry’s national skills agenda.

RFM sees the network of University Technical Colleges (UTCs) across the UK, and UTC Derby Pride Park in particular, as critical to supporting our future skills needs. We and our employers are keen to support and work with the UTC to help develop students’ skills to meet the needs of not just our industry but other key industries too.

A rail career is hugely rewarding; from involvement with massive construction projects to helping to reduce the carbon footprint of our country there really is something for everyone.
