Students mark Remembrance Day with poppies of Remembrance

Students at UTC Derby Pride Park marked Remembrance Day this year as part of their Global Learning curriculum.

Students were invited to create their own poppy stone, on which they wrote a message of remembrance or dedication to a loved one. A wreath was then made using the students’ poppies to create a Remembrance display around the perimeter of the school grounds.

The students got involved in the activity following a Remembrance assembly led by Dr Pegg and Mrs Robathan. The assembly touched on the difficult subjects of bereavement and missing loved ones due to lockdown.

Student support staff then led the activity, which was done as part of the Global Learning lessons which focus on cultural and global development.

A Year 9 student said: “The assembly really made me think about the people I missed the most during lockdown and appreciate my friends and family even more. Making the poppies ourselves made this even more meaningful and memorable.”

Dr Pegg said: “Students were wholly engaged in this activity and wrote such thoughtful messages of remembrance on their poppies.”

The poppy wreath is now on display at the UTC.
