UTC Derby students work with employers in Construction virtual work experience

Our Year 9 and Year 10 students recently took part in an exciting virtual work experience project ‘Design a home for everyone’. They worked alongside top employers in industry, including Class Of Your Own Limited and SCAPE.

During this experience, students developed their independence and teamwork skills. Tasks included researching and designing an inclusive, modern home, with support from industry professionals via Learn Live presentations. They completed research tasks and modelling, and were required to produce a written report over the week to show their understanding, designs and evaluations.

One of our Engineering Students said: “I really enjoyed the modelling aspects of the project. It was great to design and create a mood board for each room in my home.”

The virtual work experience enabled the students to consider what makes for an inclusive home. It allowed students to decide on how a home should be designed, and what different technologies and designs that could be incorporated to meet their own requirements.

Kerry Warburton, Curriculum Director of Engineering, commented: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff for supporting this event throughout the week. The students enjoyed improving their transferable skills and knowledge of Engineering, which has prepared them for their potential future careers within industry.’
