Royal Shakespeare Company brings the joy of theatre to the UTC

Year 9 and 10 students at the UTC enjoyed the fantastic opportunity to watch a pre-recorded production by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) of Macbeth, one of their set texts for English Language, as part of the RSC Schools’ Broadcast Week, running 17th-21st May.

The students were able to hear from the Head of Props about the history of the theatre in Elizabethan/Jacobean England and learnt all about the methods Shakespeare used to overcome creative restrictions with sound effects and lighting.

The play was captivating from the opening of the curtain in Act One. Our students were particularly fascinated by the director’s choice of three young girls playing the parts of the witches, dressed in matching onesies and fluffy slippers. The use of the countdown timer on stage was also an amazing way to reflect Macbeth’s journey to his ultimate demise in Act 5.

Mrs Robathan, Head of English, said: ‘The students were mesmerised by this fantastic production of Macbeth. It truly brought the text they have been studying as part of their English Literature course to life.’

One of the students who watched the live recording said: ‘Seeing the play on stage made me understand the characters so much more than just reading it in the classroom.’
