Meet our Staff: Mrs Robathan, English

Why did you decide to start teaching at the UTC?

I loved the ambition and drive of the students when I visited. I was also excited about the opportunities offered to the students through employer links, such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Bombardier.

What is it that interests you about your subject/area?

I enjoy losing myself in a new character, story or place. I love the way a simple word or piece of punctuation can change the meaning of something entirely. I enjoy teaching students English as they produce such innovative, creative pieces of work.

How did you get into teaching?

I have always been passionate about teaching, especially after studying at university. Even when I was six years old I enjoyed creating classes and mock registers for my teddies!

What have you noticed since working at the UTC?

I have noticed how well the staff and students get on, and it’s positive seeing everyone build a strong working relationship with each other. It’s also nice seeing how driven and ambitious the students are. I’ve noticed that we have highly-skilled young people at the UTC, and it’s good being a part of their education journey.

What are your ambitions for your department/subject?

I want to ensure that English is seen by the students as something equally as interesting and engaging as Science and Engineering. I am keen for the students to actively enjoy my lessons and experience the same passion my faculty and I do about the subject.

What has been your highlight of working at the UTC?

My highlight of working at the UTC has been the relationships I have developed with staff and students. One of the best days so far has been World Book Day, when all staff members dressed as characters from Harry Potter.

What do you think are the strengths of a UTC?

The strengths of a UTC are the way in which learning becomes meaningful, in the sense that it is linked directly to the workplace. The connections we have with multi-national and local companies is fantastic and enables students to explore so many different possibilities in considering future career prospects.

Why should students come to the UTC?

Students should come to UTC Derby because they will truly be part of something special. We have strong staff who are specialists in their subjects and passionate about teaching and learning. UTC Derby provides opportunities to be involved with projects and activities that aren’t always offered elsewhere. Staff members are supportive and caring, and we always put the needs of our students first.
