A Level Biology

A Level Biology provides an exciting insight into the living world, helping students understand everything from the structure of cells and genetics to ecosystems, evolution and human health. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical investigation, students develop a strong understanding of biological processes and their impact on individuals, society and the environment. The course encourages analytical thinking, problem-solving and scientific enquiry while building valuable practical and data-handling skills, making it excellent preparation for university and careers in medicine, veterinary science, healthcare, research, environmental science and biotechnology.

You will explore eight interconnected areas of biology, including:

  • Biological molecules and cells – the building blocks of life
  • Genetics snd evolution – how life develops and adapts
  • Human biology and disease – including immunity and physiology
  • Energy, ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Gene expression and biotechnology

You will also undertake at least 12 required practical investigations and develop skills in microscopy, data analysis, fieldwork and experimental design.

This course develops valuable skills in scientific investigation, data analysis, critical thinking, scientific reasoning, communication of complex scientific ideas, and problem-solving, providing an excellent foundation for a wide range of science-based degrees and careers.

Assessment

Assessment is through three written examinations and practical skills assessed throughout the course, allowing students to demonstrate both their theoretical knowledge and scientific enquiry skills.
