A Level Physics

A Level Physics explores the fundamental principles that govern the universe, from the smallest particles of matter to the largest structures in space. Combining theoretical study with practical investigation, students develop a deeper understanding of how the world works while building strong analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills. Physics is highly valued by universities and employers and provides an excellent foundation for university and careers in engineering, physics, computing, medical professions and other STEM-related fields.

You will explore topics such as:

  • Particles and radiation – the building blocks and matter
  • Waves and optics – from sound to light and imaging
  • Mechanics and materials – forces, motion and energy
  • Electricity and circuits – powering modern society
  • Fields and nuclear physics
  • Thermal physics and circular motion
  • Cutting-edge options including Astrophysicsm Medical Physics, Engineering Physics or Electronics

You will also undertake at least 12 required practical investigations and develop skills in experimental design, data analysis and evaluation.

The course develops practical laboratory skills throughout, enabling students to apply scientific concepts through investigation and experimentation while developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for further study and employment. Students will also develop advanced mathematical fluency and modelling skills, logical reasoning and critical analysis, experimental investigation and evaluation techniques, and the ability to solve complex problems in unfamiliar situations. These highly transferable skills are among the most valued by universities and employers.

Assessment

Assessment is through three written examinations, with practical skills and data analysis assessed throughout the course and contributing to the final assessment.
